Orthopaedic Conferences Recap: Key Highlights from ORS and OTA 2024
The OrthoXel team had an exciting week in Montréal, Canada where we engaged with some of the leading minds in orthopaedics and trauma fracture fixation at both the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) International Section Fracture Repair (ISFR) Biennial Meeting and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s (OTA) Annual Meeting. Here’s a recap of our journey and the impactful discussions that took place.
ORS ISFR 2024: Micromotion Nailing for Accelerated Fracture Healing with Apex Nails
On Tuesday, our co-founder and CSO Professor Hannah Dailey, PhD took centre stage to present her research on “Micromotion Nailing for Accelerated Healing” and outlined the specifics of the Apex Tibial Nail clinical study that took place in Cork, Ireland. In her rapid-fire presentation, Hannah explored the science behind fracture healing and how micromotion stimulates new bone growth.

Hannah Dailey, PhD, presenting at ORS 2024
Key Findings from Hannah’s Presentation:
- Faster Healing: Micromotion (1 mm and axial in direction) at the fracture site aids callus development, significantly speeding up healing compared to rigid fixation and standard static locking nails.
- Clinical Success: The Apex Tibial Nail has shown a 0% nonunion rate (compared to 12% nonunion rate seen in standard nailing) in clinical use, with 86% of patients achieving uneventful fracture repair in less than 20 weeks.
- Optimized Healing for At-Risk Patients: Patients with biological comorbidities, like diabetes and smoking, benefitted greatly from micromotion, with evidence of enhanced bone formation.
The audience showed great interest in this clinical study and Apex product, as the concept of micromotion has the potential to redefine the way we think about fixation and stability in fracture healing and conventional nailing techniques. Axial micromotion and the research into the mechanics behind it were a prominent feature at this event and we received encouraging feedback from fellow experts in the field.
*OrthoXel is a proud Gold sponsor for this event.
OTA 2024: Fireside Discussion Highlights and Expert Insights
At OTA, we tuned into a talk hosted by World Surgery Tour TV, Rimasys, and the AO Foundation. It connected the German Congress of Orthopaedics & Traumatology (DKOU) meeting in Berlin with the OTA meeting in Montréal. This session featured in-depth conversations on a few case studies. One of the case studies dealt with a complex distal femur fracture and included insights from prominent surgeons like Tobias Fritz, Brian Mullis, Arvind Von Keudell, and Tim Poehleman.
- Debate on Fixation Techniques: The conversation revealed the varied approaches to treating distal femur fractures, with a focus on the unique challenges of treating these fragility injuries.
- Dr. Mullis emphasized the need for stability and the critical need to enable early weight-bearing for geriatric patients.
- Dr. Von Keudell highlighted the importance of assessing medial comminution to determine stability.
- Dr. Poehleman brought attention to the need for controlled stability, suggesting a future focus on creating a balanced stability environment for optimal healing.
It was a fascinating conversation on a topic where we feel that Apex micromotion technology could be of great benefit.
Building Connections and Looking Forward
We were thrilled to meet and network with trauma surgeons from around the world and discuss our Apex products featuring micromotion technology and the Vertex Hip Fracture Nail. The positive feedback on our exhibit display, 3D animations and product samples were encouraging, and the scenic backdrop of Montréal added a memorable touch to the event.
Overall, these events were very successful as we embraced the opportunity to display our innovative technology with an engaged audience. As we continue to push boundaries in orthopaedic innovation, these conferences serve as important platforms for exchanging ideas and exploring new possibilities in fracture care. We look forward to keeping you updated on our journey and future collaborations.
